Experience

Kurt first joined Blazek & Vetterling in 2012. He rejoined the firm in 2017 after three years at Deloitte working in various practice areas, including the Estate, Gift, Trust, and Charitable division of Deloitte’s Washington National Tax Practice.

He has served clients ranging from passthroughs, high net worth individuals, estates and trusts to nonprofit hospitals and private foundations. In addition to client services, he helped develop internal training, models, and checklists on tax issues such as: charitable contribution substantiation, tax reform for individuals and the proposed regulations on IRC section 2704.

Kurt’s practice includes an emphasis on private foundations and the challenges they face in the areas of unrelated business taxable income, excise tax on investment income, expenditure requirements, qualifying distributions, reporting for alternative investments, applications for federal tax exemption, and state and local tax issues ranging from complex investments, meeting qualifying distribution requirements, and investment-related state and foreign filings.

Kurt has served as an instructor at University of Texas School of Law Nonprofit Organizations Institute conferences; additionally, he is a continuing professional education instructor for the Firm’s internal private foundation curriculum.

    Experience

    Erica joined Blazek & Vetterling in 2001.

    Erica serves a wide variety of nonprofit clients, including social service agencies, schools, churches and religious organizations, museums and arts organizations, and foundations.

    She regularly serves as an instructor for continuing professional education courses focused on audits of nonprofit organizations and is an expert in Single Audit and Texas open-enrollment charter school compliance requirements. Erica aslo serves as a concurring review partner for many of our audit engagements.

    Erica began her accounting career with Ernst & Young in Houston in 1986.

    Erica previously served as field finance officer to the UN Relief and Works Agency in Amman, Jordan and as regional controller and financial officer for the International Rescue Committee in New York, Sudan, and Kenya. She also was the Director of Finance for Project Grad, where she was responsible for day-to-day financial operations of a $10 million budget providing comprehensive educational reform services to Houston inner-city schools.

    Experience

    Christine joined Blazek & Vetterling in 2009 and brings more than 30 years of experience in audit, assurance, and financial consulting, with a focus on the nonprofit sector. She serves a diverse client base including conservancy organizations, private schools, private foundations, performing arts organizations, membership associations, religious organizations, and social service agencies.

    Passionate about helping nonprofit organizations maximize their impact, Christine works closely with her clients to ensure regulatory compliance, strengthen internal controls, and enhance financial reporting to clearly communicate each organization’s mission and results.

    In addition to her client responsibilities, Christine leads the firm’s Audit Efficiency and Effectiveness Task Force, driving initiatives that improve the audit processes and deliver greater value to clients. She also serves on the Technical Review Team, supporting the firm’s commitment to quality and compliance.

    Prior to joining the firm, Christine spent approximately four years with Redstone Companies, where she served as the interim CFO for several affiliated entities. She began her career at Deloitte & Touche, where she advanced to senior manager.

    Barbara joined Blazek & Vetterling in 2002 and was made a partner of the Firm in 2019. Barbara serves as the head of our tax practice and is an authority on nonprofit tax matters and provides clients an in-depth knowledge of the tax code as it applies to nonprofit organizations.

    Barbara’s clients include private schools, arts organizations, social service agencies, and employee benefit plans.

    Barbara’s specialization in nonprofit organizations has brought her significant experience with many tax matters affecting nonprofits, preparing and filing annual 990’s, filing for initial exempt status determination, unrelated business income tax, and excise tax.

    In addition to serving clients directly, Barbara utilizes her expertise to teach on a variety of topics. She has served as an instructor or conference speaker for:

    Caroline C. Vetterling Bio

    Experience

    Caroline began her public accounting career as a tax specialist with a local Houston accounting firm and subsequently joined Deloitte as a consultant in their small business services department. Ms. Vetterling spent fourteen years with Deloitte, the last five of which were as an audit partner, serving a wide variety of clients. She also served the firm as a national accounting and auditing specialist in both nonprofit organizations and in banking, served on the national quality review team, and headed the Houston office computer services group.

    Caroline has also served on the Board of Directors of Legend Bank, been a guest lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School, and presented seminars for the Houston Chapter of CPAs, Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts, Texas Association of School Business Officials, Association of Christian Schools, Independent School Association of the Southwest, University of Houston Powertools for Nonprofits Conference, and the United Way of Greater Houston.
